Innovating in Water and Sanitation in 2021 in Latin America and the Caribbean

You have probably heard about the Fourth Industrial Revolution’s (4IR) boom: artificial intelligence, virtual reality, and remote sensors are humanity’s future. Beyond advanced language algorithms or video games, water and sanitation are also part of the 4IR.

Despite Latin America and the Caribbean having one-third of the world's freshwater, no universal access to the resource is guaranteed. Following the Sustainable Development Goal 6, HydroBID and other models from the Inter-American Development Bank seek to ensure universal access to water and sanitation by 2030. By improving data collection on changes in climate, water demand, and land use, it is expected to contribute to a more efficient control of water supply and quality. At a large scale, the implementation in infrastructure service planning of 4IR digital resources like HydroBID would lead to 6 percentage point growth in the region's economy.
